iPad:’Engineering issues’ blamed for missing Retina Display, SD slot on next iPad

While rumors that Apple’s second-generation iPad due next week would include Retina Displays and SD card slots have long been refuted, one publication that originally made those claims has revised its predictions to say it no longer expects those features either.
Engadget on Thursday changed its predictions ahead of next week’s iPad 2 event, and said that “engineering issues” led Apple to make last-minute design changes on the device. That’s a change from what the site reported in January.
“It’s worth noting once again that these sources have been dead right on specific Apple plans and specifications for unannounced products in the past, and we have no reason to believe these changes are due to anything more than legitimate engineering decisions made close to launch,” editor Joshua Topolsky wrote.
While it’s unclear how accurate that hypothesis is, AppleInsider confidently reported in January that the next-generation iPad would not have an SD card slot. Instead, a suspicious opening on third-party iPad 2 cases was said to facilitate access to the tablet’s SIM card for 3G connectivity.
Similarly, AppleInsider also noted in January that there would not be a high-resolution Retina Display on the second-generation iPad. Apple has reportedly focused on making the new screen thinner and improving its anti-reflective properties, but will not offer a high pixel density like the iPhone 4. Instead, Retina-like displays are being positioned for a third-generation of the tablet due later this year or early next.
As part of its revised claims, Engadget believes Apple will introduce a thinner iPad next week, with a screen size and resolution identical to the first-generation device. The new model will reportedly include 512MB of RAM, doubling last year’s model and matching the iPhone 4, inside of a new, faster A5 processor.
The new iPad is also widely expected to include at least one forward facing camera camera for FaceTime video chat. Some third-party cases have also shown that the iPad 2 could have a rear-facing camera as well.

The report also predicted that Apple will show off a preview of iOS 5 next week and issue a software development kit for developers. And he believes the company could possibly show off an expansion of its plans to expand services in the cloud.
Apple will host a media event in San Francisco on March 2 to show off its next iPad. AppleInsider will have full live coverage.

iPad:Rumor cites possibility that Apple’s next-gen iPad will sport carbon fiber body

Posted by admin in Friday, February 25th 2011   under: ipad    Tags: , , , , ,
In an effort to make its next-generation iPad lighter, Apple could replace the device’s existing aluminum enclosure and instead make it high-strength carbon fiber, a new rumor suggests.
As he is wont to do, John Gruber of Daring Fireball made the comment in the footnotes of his latest post. However, he cautioned that he is not 100 percent confident in the rumor, which is why it was placed in the footnotes.
“I could publish things I’m only half-sure about, like the iPad 2 switching from aluminum to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, but I don’t, because I’m only half sure and I’ve only heard about it from second-hand sources who themselves are unsure about it,” he wrote.
“And even if I were to off-handedly mention such speculation, I’d do so in a footnote and take pains to emphasize the uncertain nature of the information and the second-hand status of the sources thereof.”
The post was made largely in response to a new report from Engadget, which claimed that “engineering issues” forced Apple to remove features like an SD card and Retina Display from its second-generation iPad. Gruber himself previously responded in January and said claims of a high-resolution Retina Display on the next iPad were “too good to be true.”
This week, he added that “nothing” has changed about the iPad 2 since January. He said it’s very uncommon for major features to be axed from a device from Apple at the last minute, as “most major Apple products are pretty stable two months out from release.”
For its part, AppleInsider reported in January that the next iPad will not have an SD card slot or a Retina Display.
The most prominent example of Apple removing a feature from a new device just before its introduction came in 2009, when Apple planned to add a rear-facing camera to the iPod touch. AppleInsider first reported just days before Apple’s media event that technical issues forced the company to scrap the feature.
As for the rumor about a carbon fiber enclosure, a patent application discovered by AppleInsider last November highlighted Apple’s interest in using the material to create a lighter iPad. The Cupertino, Calif., company has shown interest in using either a layered carbon fiber material or a spine or frame used to support a carbon fiber skin.
Patent 2
Apple could mold a supportive spine to a carbon fiber skin for a unique implementation of the material, in order to address issues where carbon fiber can crack or break if bent or rolled in a certain way. Apple’s patent application, which shows an iPad-like device in its accompanying illustrations, notes that devices with a metal back are durable, but can be heavier and more expensive.
Apple showed interest in building a carbon fiber MacBook Air in 2008, in an effort to make its diminutive notebook even thinner and lighter. Carbon fiber is an extremely lightweight material comprised of very thin fibers about .005 to .010 millimeters in diameter and composed mostly of carbon atoms.

iPad 2 sports A5 processor, 512 MB of RAM, cameras, thinner design? Apple to talk iOS 5 and cloud on March 2?

Posted by admin in Friday, February 25th 2011   under: ipad    Tags: , , ,

Engadget has retracted its earlier report claiming that Apple’s second generation iPad will include an SD card reader and a “super-high resolution” display, and is now backing up much of what we have heard about the iPad 2 already. Engadget‘s sources claim that the new iPad will feature the same display as the first generation model (screen size and resolution) and will be mostly a tech spec update. The new specs are said to include a brand-new, faster processor called the A5 in addition to a RAM upgrade to match the 512 MB found in Apple’s flagship smartphone (iPhone 4).
Engadget is also backing up the reports that the new iPad will rock cameras. Engadget does not seem too sure about the back camera, and seems to be going off the of purported physical mockups of the device, but they are certain about the front-facing camera for FaceTime calling and such. Engadget also touches upon the mystery behind the iPad 2′s unknown port found on our very own iPad 2 case at 9to5mac HQ and on our exclusive iPad 2 mold drawings from a few months back. They are not too sure about the purpose of this new port, or if it will even come in the final hardware, but it may have something to do with some last-minute engineering shifts.
On a final note, the report presents some hints at what else we might be seeing on March 2nd at the Yerba Buena Center in San Fransisco. They think we’ll be seeing a preview of iOS 5, which makes sense since Apple usually holds iOS developer previews in March/April, in addition to some talk about Apple and the cloud. The cloud point is still very vague at this time.

iPhone Game:Is Tiny Wings the new Angry Birds?

Posted by admin in Friday, February 25th 2011   under: iphone Games    Tags: , ,

The number one paid app in the App store right now is a great little game called Tiny Wings that ever so slightly riffs off of Angry Birds(now #2).  The gameplay looks excellent and it is $.99 cents.  The reviews are somewhat comical but almost 100% good.
I’m going to keep this short because I need to get back to playing this game. Basically, you can forget about Angry Birds, it’s all about this happy hopeful bird. Simple, yet addictive casual gameplay will keep you coming back for more. So what are you waiting for? Just press the download button, no need for hesitations here.
If you aren’t already addicted, get there.

iPhone:Joystickers provide a little tactile feedback on a touchscreen

Joysticker Classic
Do you want little tactile-feedback joysticks on your iOS-device screen? And do you want to be a founding financier of the company that produces them? You’re in luck. Head over to the Kickstarter funding project of Chicago-based Joystickers, who want to muss up your shiny screen with tiny, sticky joysticks in order to improve the feedback you get in shooter and platform games.
The joysticks — the inventors call them the Classic — are held onto your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Android device with micro suction cups that won’t damage your screen. Joystickers founder and engineer Anthony Cerra says the special sucker for the Classic is imported from Japan. According to Cerra, “Every detail of this product was custom manufactured to our specification — even the spring.” The spring itself is manufactured in Chicago and is designed for long-lasting durability.
Joystickers is looking for US$25,000 in funding by March 24, which will pay for injection molding production for the Classic and a stylus and paintbrush that they’ve designed. A $30 donation will get you a pair of Classics when production starts in May.

iPhone:Localscope is a slick and complete tool for finding and getting to your destination

Posted by admin in Friday, February 25th 2011   under: iphone news    Tags: , , , , , , , ,

There are plenty of apps that find restaurants, hospitals and other things near you using the iPhone’s GPS. Localscope, a US$1.99 app, is the most complete and easy to use solution I’ve seen.
Localscope easily lets you find destinations using Google or Bing, Foursquare, Twitter and Wikimapia. You don’t have to re-enter your search terms, just slide from one search engine to another. One side benefit was that in my area of Southern Arizona, Google had far more information than Bing. The app makes it easy to compare search results.
You can also search using your contacts or recent searches. Results can be viewed as a list, on a map, or using augmented reality, which is basically a live camera view with the direction of destinations superimposed on the screen. Phone numbers of destinations are provided, as well as websites for more info. A really nice feature is integration with both TomTom and Navigon apps. When you find a location, a tap on a button sends the data to those apps. Another tap, and you are navigating with turn-by-turn directions. I also like the ability to save a location to your address book or share a location via email, SMS, Twitter or Facebook.

Gallery: Localscope screenshots

Using the app was a pleasure, with the GUI nicely designed and easy to use. I really liked the specificity of catagories, like Barber, Gym and Ice Cream. Most apps don’t drill down that far. Localscope is not US-centric, so it can be used anywhere. Integration with Navigon worked just fine for me. Localscope launched the Navigon app, and pushing one button started the route.
There are certainly a lot of free apps that do what Localscope does; for example, I have always liked Around Me. On the other hand, Localscope adds a lot of nice features, is ad free, utilizes multiple search engines, and integrates with two of the best-selling nav apps. I think Localscope is worthy of serious consideration. The app requires iOS 4.0 or greater.

iPhone:Geohot Interviewed Again Over Sony Lawsuit

Posted by admin in Friday, February 25th 2011   under: iphone news    Tags: , , ,

In case you’ve been too busy playing on your PS3, renowned iPhone hacker George “Geohot” Hotz is in the middle of a heated lawsuit with Sony. Geohot “jailbroke” the Sony PS3 and circumvented Sony’s DRM. The ramification of his exploit is that Sony is now suing Geohot for “encouraging privacy” on their platform.
Geohot has done another interview on The Alyona Show in which he addresses the issues with the Sony debate and clarifies his stance on the subject. Check out the video after the break.
Geohot has been very vocal of his opinions on how Sony responded to his hack. He appeared on G4′s Attack of the Show in an interview about the Sony issue, and he even made a rap video about the situation.
Hotz recently asked for donations from the community towards his legal fees. The first round of donations was successful, and we’re sure Geohot will continue to receive support from his followers in his battle for consumer rights.
How do you feel about Geohot’s message? Do you support his actions?

iPhone:‘Undeletable Apps’ Keeps Your iPhone Apps Secure

Posted by admin in Friday, February 25th 2011   under: iphone news    Tags: , , , , , ,

Who would dare place a highly configured iPhone into the hands of a 5 year old? You’re liable to come back and see half of your apps deleted.
But if you had Undeletable Apps — A jailbreak tweak for the iPhone — you’d be able to rest easy knowing that your apps were there to stay.
That’s because Undeletable Apps prevents you from deleting your apps, even when in jiggle mode. How does it do this? Check inside for the full lowdown.

This is a simple jailbreak tweak with a magnificent outcome. Basically, Undeletable Apps removes the ‘x’ icon from your apps when they are in jiggle mode, protecting them from deletion.
Since jailbreak apps and stock iPhone apps like the clock and weather can’t be deleted anyway, this only applies to apps you purchased in the App Store.
The only entities that aren’t protected by this tweak are Safari shortcuts; those can still be deleted regardless as you can see in the screenshot above.

If there’s one thing I wish this app had, it would be a settings section to pick and choose which apps you wanted to protect. Almost like designating a franchise player on your favorite football team.
Other than that, there’s not much else to complain about here, especially since this tweak is free for jailbroken iPhones on the Cydia store.
