iPhone 5 Not at WWDC, Early Next Year Release

Well now we’ve just posted word that Apple has now gone all official with the dates for their Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, when most are expecting the unveiling of the next generation iPhone, the iPhone 5.
However according to an article over on 9to5 Mac, Jim Dalrymple of The Loop is reporting that no Apple hardware will be unveiled during this years WWDC so that means no new Apple iPads, Macs or iPhones, including the iPhone 5.
As reported, WWDC 2011 will concentrate on iOS and Mac OS so it looks like Apple is breaking with their usual pattern for launching new iPhone handsets.
This seems to be further confirmed by Japanese website Macotakara who reports that production of the iPhone 5 will not go into mass production until later this year and intimates an early 2012 launch for the iPhone 5.
Of course Apple did release the Verizon iPhone not too long ago, and there’s rumour that the white iPhone 4 is coming sometime in spring, so perhaps Apple has decided that June is not the right time to release the 5th generation handset.
If true will you be disappointed if Apple doesn’t come out with the iPhone 5 during WWDC 2011?

Which New iPhone 5 Rumors Pass The Smell Test?

iPhone 5 rumors continue to drip out of the tech blogosphere. Read Charles Moore’s quick, easy round-up of what looks likely for the iPhone — and what is still up in the air.
iphone 5 sightingOne of the newer iPhone 5 “sightings.”

China News Business Times Reporters Zheng Shufang and Liu Jiaxi report that industry scuttlebutt has it that the iPhone 5 has entered its trial production stage with Apple’s subcontractor Hon Hai Electronics, will have a, A5 dual-core processor, a metal chassis to improve antenna sensitivity, a scratch-resistant 4-inch capacitive touchscreen, and a 50 millon pixel camera, and will be equipped with “wave and pay” Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, and slated for release in 3Q ’11, although main Apple contract manufacturers don’t comment on rumors if they want to remain in Apple’s good graces.
The China Times columnists also report that Hon Hai plans to build a new plant at Sao Paulo, Brazil, specifically to manufacture Apple OEM products, but that’s not projected to begin production until 2013.
Meanwhile, it would seem that whatever feature set the iPhone 5 emerges with has been set, so here’s a rundown of what we may or may not see come the unveiling based on rumors out there:
Faster Processor and More RAM
it’s virtually certain that iPhone 5 will be powered by the same A5 dual core processor that Apple introduced in the iPad 2. Much less likely I think are suggestions that Apple might double the iPhone 5′s RAM capacity from the 512 MB in the current iPhone to two gigabytes of RAM. Apple has only taken the iPad to up to 512 MB, and there seems little reason to believe that they’ll go with more in the iPhone 5.
Bigger Display
There is a strong likelihood that the iPhone 5 will have a larger display, most likely somewhere measuring four inches diagonal. I’ll be surprised if this doesn’t materialize; the larger screen will be touted heavily my Apple’s marketing and promotion arms.
Higher-resolution Display
It is far less less likely that the iPhone 5 will have greater resolution than the current, excellent Retina display in the iPhone 4.
Case Design
Most prognosticators expect the iPhone 5 to look a lot like the iPhone 4 although as noted, many expect a larger display and possibly a brushed aluminum back panel replacing the current glass back. A virtually sure thing is that a white iPhone will finally be offered with version 5. However, rumors that the iPhone 5 could have a physical keyboard can be safely considered someone’s wishful thinking.
Carbon Fiber Case
Carbon fiber composites are the structural engineering material of the future, and thanks to recent advances in production efficiency, they’re going to be more and more common in mainstream as well as high-end products like the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s fuselage and wings, and the new McLaren MP4-12C, exoticar, which features a one-piece molded carbon fiber composite chassis tub. They will be especially well-suited to making computer and igadget enclosures, being extremely lightweight, amazingly strong, non-conductive, and not blocking RF signals. I don’t think we’ll see a carbon fiber iPhone 5, however.
Antenna Moved Inside
After the press feeding fender frenzy over the antenna in the iPhone for losing gain if touched by the hand holding the iPhone, it’s quite probable that Apple will move the antenna back inside in a more conventional configuration, most likely similar to the way the antenna is configured in the iPad.
64 GB Storage / The Cloud
There’s a possibility that Apple could offer 64 GB capacity as an option with the iPhone 5. At the other end of the spectrum, some have suggested that Apple may also offer a bare-bones version of the iPhone 5 at a lower price, possibly with cloud data storage and only enough internal RAM to run the machine and perhaps serve as a temporary buffer. Something is brewing with Apple building a major data center in Tennessee, that could mean a substantially greater emphasis on the cloud for Apple devices.
Ready for the iPhone 5? I’m on the fence here.
Improved Battery Life
An improvement in battery life is possible, although don’t expect anything dramatic.
Better Camera
iPhone 4 has a 5MPx camera. Rumor has it that iPhone 5 will get an 8 MPx camera, but the China Times report says they’re sticking with 5 5MPx, and given that the cameras in the iPad 2 are described by most reviewers as mediocre at best. Apple hasn’t chosen to disclose the iPad camera’s megapixel rating, but it seems highly improbable that it’s any more than 5MPx. I’m not anticipating any change in the camera spec from the iPhone 4.
Home Button to Be Replaced/Moved
A fairly persistent rumor has been that the Home button will disappear, and the iPhone 5 getting either touch sensitive controls or the button moved to one of the phone’s edges. If there’s to be a bigger screen, things will have to be reorganized. However, my guess is that the iPhone 5 wil still have a Home button somewhere.
A CDMA Model iPhone 5
Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA), is a digital cellular technology that uses spread-spectrum techniques and competes with the GSM celular technology that the iPhone currently supports.
Another rumor that’s been making the rounds, actually for for several years, now is that Apple will launch a dual-mode iPhone that works on both GSM and CDMA networks, serving AT&T and Verizon customers simultaneously.
Near Field Communication (NFC) technology
There have been rumors going both ways on this one, and I’ve already blogged here on the topic a couple of times. I think it’s inevitable in the long run that Apple will include “wave and pay” NFC on the iPhone, but whether it will be ready for the iPhone 5 is another matter. I’m completely on the fence on this one having heard compelling arguments from both camps. The China Times report says it’s a go.
HDMI Output
The iPad to has enhanced HDMI output capability, and it seems more probable than not that the iPhone 5 could have HDMI output added using the same optional connector as the iPad 2.
Enhanced Voice Recognition
Another rumor is that with IOS 5, expected to make its debut along with the iPhone 5, the iPhone will get enhanced voice recognition capabilities and more voice commands. I don’t have a strong conviction either way on this feature’s likelihood this time around.
Release Not Coming Until November
The reasoning on this one is that due to February’s Verizon iPhone 4 release, Apple will push the iPhone five’s debut back to late summer or even November. I think November is highly doubtful, and am still anticipating a late spring or early summer release.
There are probably a few more, but that should cover most of the iPhone 5 rumored feature bases. Remember, the opinions expressed are speculation, logical deduction, semi-educated guesswork, plus rumors and leaks from the far East, which have a mixed record for accuracy. Unless someone leaves a prototype iPhone 5 in a bar, as happened last year with the iPhone 4, we’ll all have to wait for the announcement date to know for sure.

Wildcard: iPhone 5, iOS 5, iPad 3 release dates no longer attached at hip

The same shadowy figured which can’t decide whether the iPhone 5 is really coming this summer have now posited that even if it does, Apple’s next-gen iOS 5 operating system may not immediately come along for the ride. And this comes at a time when there’s increasing speculation that with the iPad 2 seemingly less than the grand revolution Apple must have originally envisioned, there just might be an iPad 3 coming before year’s end. Put two and two together, and the swamp monsters might as well be claiming that iOS 5 is in fact going to be timed for a late 2011 release – alongside the third generation iPad. With Apple’s nearly religious penchant for sticking with its annual calendar updates, common sense says it’s all a bunch of hooey; the iPhone 5 and iOS 5 will debut in the summer, with whatever features Apple has ready by then; more grand ambitions will simply be shelved it the calendar doesn’t line up. And the iPad 3 will be a March 2012 affair. But it does make one wonder… what if this particular wildcard posited by the shadowy figures just happens to be accurate? The implications would be, at the least, intriguing.
The intrigue starts with the fact that there’s only so much operating system development which can be done a phone. iOS 4 is arguably all the iPhone needs for now, with features finding their way in on the 4.x releases just as surely as they eventually would with iOS 5. So the iPhone 5 could launch with iOS 4.5 and few would decline to purchase it (or enjoy it) as a result. But the iPad is a different beast. While it’s still a semi-tethered spoke in Apple’s computer-centric wheel, Steve Jobs has made it clear that he eventually envisions the iPad as the mainstream computer of the future; traditional computers like the Mac and PC would be only for power users. In terms of being less of a “big ten inch iPhone” and more of a computer replacement, the iPad still has a long way to go. The iPad 2 gained a number of nice hardware specs, but doesn’t really come any closer to becoming a true “computer” than its predecessor did. And the iPad 3 can gain all the new specs its wants, but it’ll really come down to the on-screen environment, specifically the sophistication of the operating system itself as well as the kind of sophistication it allows third party developers to bring to the table. The notion that iOS 5 would go hand in hand with the iPad 3 would be an intriguing shift on Apple’s part, as the company has previously released new versions of iOS at the time a new iPhone was ready. Such an iPad-centric shift for iOS would signal that Apple now sees the iPad as a more vital part of the equation than the iPhone – or else that the iPhone experience has evolved such that it’s time to put more chips down on the iPad side of the table. It would also explain why in the heck Apple would be rolling out an iPad 3 in the same calendar year as the iPad 2 rollout.
But that’s all speculation into what Apple’s motives might be if anything the swamp monsters are claiming about the products involved is even true. And we’ve learned such claims are always a crapshoot at best. Smart money says the iPhone 5, iOS 5, and iPad 3 will arrive when they’re supposed to, according to Apple’s well entrenched calendar. But if the iPhone 5 does arrive this summer without iOS 5 in tow, it might be time to revisit the validity of the foggy-bottom claims. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.

Apple could sell 100 million iPhone 5s, historic data suggests

If past iPhone sales are anything to go by, Apple is set to move a whooping hundred million iPhone 5 units. In other words, a fifth-generation iPhone will match sales of all previous models combined, helping Apple maintain a healthy 20+ percent market share in smartphones. The assumption is based on the above chart from Asymco that outlines monthly sales for all four iPhone models, approximated based on actual quarterly sales divided over the months according to the number of days available. So far, each iPhone generation doubles on the previous.
We also know that iPhone demand usually outstrips supply because Apple is selling these things as fast as they can make them. That being said, one only needs to look at historic sales data to “build up a model of production ramps and look for patterns of growth.” This leads us to the following conclusion…
Based on that data, we can approximate that iPhone 5 could sell about a hundred million units before it’s succeeded by a sixth-generation model. That’s just an assumption, of course, albeit a valid one because it stems from reasonably accurate predictions based on past sales data. Asymco summs it up best:
You don’t begin by asking how many will sell. You begin by asking how many can they make.
They also mention a prediction calling for half a billion new smartphone users buying smartphones in the next two years. Another interesting tidbit: Assuming the iPhone 4 sells for at least one or more quarter, it should move between 60 to 65 million units in total.

iPhone 5: launches early 2012?

The iPhone 5 puzzle has received a few new pieces and they both point to the product launch not taking place at this year’s WWDC. Jim Dalrymple – usually accurate – from The Loop claims that no hardware will be unveiled at the World Wide Developers Conference: no iPhones, no iPads, no Macs. But how could Apple kill their annual summer iPhone launch pattern?
Apple’s apparent focus on software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in 2011, not a hardware event.
Apple typically sticks to patterns such as new iPods every September, new iPhones in June, now new iPads in March, and major Mac upgrades around October. This year is already different. Based on Apple’s WWDC press release and rumors from last week, Apple won’t be holding their annual March-April iOS preview event. The WWDC invite clearly says Apple will preview the next version of iOS.
At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.
Apple even introduced a new Verizon iPhone 4 in January of this year and it only launched last month (February). Apple is also expected to release a white version of the iPhone 4 next month. These two iPhone 4 upgrades seem to allow Apple to push back the launch of their next-generation handset. Afterall, how could they release updated iPhone 4s in February and April then a whole new device in June? Apple on releasing a new iPhone in June after releasing the Verizon iPhone: “we’re not stupid.”
If it’s not coming at WWDC when will it? The usually well-sourced Macotakara.jp claims that the iPhone 5 is yet to hit the full production stage and says that the iPhone 5 will go into mass production late in 2011 for an early 2012 launch.
According to Chinese sources, had been rumored to be announced for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 iPhone 5, it does not begin to manufacture the parts, the launch seems to be lost in fiscal 2012.
This would be around a year after the Verizon iPhone 4 launch, creating a new pattern for iPhone launches. The site reiterates earlier claims of a new, aluminum enclosure which is possibly taking longer to produce. A chinese site recently claimed the new iPhone would go into production in Q3 of this year – backing up an iPhone-less WWDC.

iPhone 5 Rumors Simplified (Updated March 26)

It’s that time of the year again; time for rumors of the next iPhone to submerge and fuel the fan’s dreams to own the latest of apple creations. After many hours of digging around I decided to simplify all the rumors into one page which will be updated weekly at first and more often as the release date approaches. These rumors are based on these three things:
Apple’s Past Behavior: Over the past four years apple has revolutionize the smartphone world with each new iPhone, leaving competitors struggling to catch on for about half year. Each year Apple releases a new generation of all its products which are companied by a new iOS update. Also, the same technology is shared each year to the new generations of the iPhone, iTouch, and now the iPad.
Competition: Since Apple only releases one new iPhone a year, and no one but Apple is releasing iPhones, it must overshadow all current competition so that every person who signs up to a two year contract isn’t left with an outdated hardware device within six month. Today Apple’s biggest competition are powerful HTC, Motorola and Samsung phones powered by Google’s Android, meaning what Android does today the iPhone 5 must do.
Common Sense: If Apple is good at something is at making beautiful devices which please the majority of costumers, and often infuriates a minority. Therefore we cannot expect very geeky things but rather simple to use tools and features for the less technology wise market.
March 26 Update
  • Will be released sometime during the summer
  • Will come loaded with iOS 5
  • Will be available on ATT and Verizon from day one
  • Will have the A5 chip 1GHz dual-core that the iPad sports: Two times faster CPU and nine times faster GPU than previous A4
  • Will have a larger screen: Possibly 4 in but keeping its same length to width ratio and body size
  • Will be lighter than the iPhone 4
  • Will possibly rid of its home button and opt for more multi-touch gestures: A five-finger pinch will take you to the home screen, this agrees with the larger screen rumor
  • The glass body will be replaced with a unibody aluminum body with a plastic part behind to allow for cellular reception: Possibly shaped like an apple which will glow with new notifications
  • Will have better battery life
  • A 5 mega-pixel back camera and a VGA front-facing camera: 8 mega-pixels is a bit ridiculous unless you are planning to print a 16in by 20in image of your photos + a lower resolution camera allows for a lower price and a VGA camera will allow facetime over a network as higher resolution means more data to send
  • Will have a NFC chip to allow for reading advertisements and process payments
  • A new cloud based service: Google keeps Android user’s contacts, calendar, pictures, music and data on its servers, Apple needs to move on to cloud if it wants to catch up. A free version of mobileme is rumored
  • A new feature which will wow us all
The following images are “leaked” images from the phones manufacturers. If you believe Apple makes the iPhone you are lying to your self here are the actual manufacturers.
iPhone Contractors – Partial list
  • Software and design: Apple, USA
  • Assembly: Foxconn, Quanta, Unknown, Taiwan
  • TFT-LCD Screen: Sanyo Epson, Sharp, TMD, Japan
  • Video processor chip: Samsung, Korea
  • Touch screen overlay: Balda, Germany
  • Bluetooth chip: Cambridge Silicon Radio, UK
  • Chip manufacture: TSMC, UMC, Taiwan
  • Baseband IC: Infineon Technology, Germany
  • WIFI Chip: Marvell, USA
  • Touch screen control chip: Broadcom, USA
  • CMOS chip: Micron, USA
  • NOR Flash ICs: Intel SST, USA
  • Display Driver chip: National Semi, Novatek, US

Verizon iPhone 5 late arrival leads to thoughts bizarre and defeating

It’s that old conundrum: two valid choices in front of you, can’t make up your mind, end up going with a third option you know you don’t want, out of some kind of twisted self defeatism. The ponderance is simple enough: get the Verizon iPhone 4, now wait until the Verizon iPhone 5 later this year. Both options are defendable, and either one makes sense to someone who’s been waiting years for the iPhone to come to Verizon and views the iPhone and its iOS platform to be the best smartphone venue on the market in 2011. And yet that same “I can’t choose between two good options” syndrome has some longtime iPhone lusters talking instead about options they don’t even want – and for no clear reason.
To be blunt, I’m tired of iPhone 5 lusters asking me to talk them out of doing stupid shit. “I don’t know whether to get the Verizon iPhone 4 or wait for the Verizon iPhone 5, so I might just get the Thunderbolt instead.” Do you like the Thunderbolt? “No.” Are you a fan of that Android nonsense? “No.” So then WTF are you talking about? “I don’t know.” It comes down to, it seems, that some folks on Verizon have simply been made to wait too long and are now pre-conditioned to talk themselves out of what they know they want. And it’s only human nature.
In fact that Verizon iPhone 4 vs 5 debate isn’t even the crux, but rather just a crutch or an excuse to deny oneself that which has been externally denied for too long. Spend long enough without anything that you wish you had, and you’ll eventually come up with reasons, real or otherwise, why you don’t really want it. The reason is simple: everybody rationalizes. No iPhone on Verizon all these years? Those who’ve desperately wanted an iPhone, but have been denied having it on their preferred carrier all these years, have at least subconsciously tried to sell themselves on not wanting one anyway. Fraudulent clowns fabricate an imaginary iPhone 4 antenna issue, and the Verizon-customers-in-waiting tell themselves that hey, maybe it’s true after all, maybe there really is a nation full iPhone 4 users who can’t touch their phone without it magically disconnecting. We fall for what we want to fall for, and Verizon customers, until this year, have needed compelling reasons to convince themselves that the iPhone wasn’t the lusted-after beast that they consider it to be. Otherwise, how to stay sane in the face of being denied?
It’s why those who’ve been “just friends” for too long can never manage to turn it into something more, even if they both reach a point where they can and want to. The reasons they’ve subconsciously sold themselves on over the years for wanting to remain just friends? Those get burned-in whether they’re legitimate or mere negative rationalization, and can’t easily be shaken off even once the opportunity presents itself. It’s the same self-protective yet flawed human logic which has Verizon customers who’ve spent years wanting the iPhone now denying themselves the Verizon iPhone 4 even though it’s everything they’ve wanted since 2007, using the promise of an upcoming Verizon iPhone 5 as a mere excuse for actively denying themselves what had, up until recently, been long denied to them by no choice of their own.
The extent to which Apple screwed up by not having the iPhone on multiple carriers from day one remains to be seen. The company is now taking significant steps to correct that mistake. But because Apple denied so many people the iPhone for so long, it now has to overcome the most self-defeating rationalized underbelly of human nature – and selling the Verizon iPhone 5 will be a far greater challenge that it should be. Millions of Verizon customers already know they want the iPhone 5 – heck, they want the iPhone 4 – but now Apple has to figure out how to work around the fact that they’ve spent so long convincing themselves that they were okay without having that which was denied to them. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 Wont Have iOS 5 in June: Your Thoughts

Recently there has been rumour that Apple may push out the next iteration of their operating system, iOS 5 next month, although nothing was heard about iOS 5 during the Apple iPad 2 event. However the word is now that iOS 5 will not make an appearance until later in the year.
According to an article over on Phone Dog, the guys over at Tech Crunch are claiming a couple of “solid sources” have Apple might unveil iOS 5 during WWDC in June however will not release the OS at that time.
Apparently the word is iOS 5 will not see release until a new version of the Apple iPad and will be built around the cloud with new Apple services, apparently one of which could be a “music locker” service and possibly a friends and family location service.
Thus if this new rumour is spot on it means the iPhone 5 probably wont come out to play packing iOS 5, Apple usually launches a new iPhone alongside a new iOS, but it appear if true Apple is changing tactics.
So when Apple unveils the iPhone 5 it will probably come out sporting iOS 4+, but will Apple break from tradition with the iPhone 5 and iOS 5? We’d like to hear your thoughts on this latest rumour, which you can voice to our comments area below.

iPhone 5: The Speculation Continues, Albeit Very Thin

Now that Apple doesn’t really have anything new to offer the eager mobile space, all Apple rumours tend to fall at the door of the next iOS smartphone, the one that has become known as the iPhone 5, and today more speculation hits the net waves.
According to an article over on Redmond Pie and by way of 9to5 Mac, the speculation now is that the iPhone 5 will come out to play packing a 4-inch touch screen and is expected to release before the 30th of June.
Apparently this latest iPhone 5 rumour comes via Italian site Mela.Blog, who have apparently notices a hand-made case listed on the Apple online store, and apparently comment that the design hints at a larger future iPhone, so presumably the iPhone 5.
Personally I don’t see any difference that would warrant saying the case was for anything other than the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G like the store indicates, but check out the picture below to see what you think.
As for that speculation that the iPhone 5 will arrive before the 30th of June, well this is placing quite a bit of credence on a book listing for a book called “iPhone 5 Made Simple” on Amazon that has a release date of the same time, but really doesn’t mean Apple will let iOS users get the device on or even before that date does it.
Still make of it what you will, but to accept these as further proof that the iPhone 5 will be bigger and release before the end of June maybe pushing speculation a bit too far. Is anyone becoming tired of all this speculation over the iPhone 5?
